You know that certain movie that you go to see just so you can throw your hateful words at it afterwards only to find out it's not as terrible as you thought it would be? For me, Year One was just that.
It's not a good movie by any means, but the little things in it make it slightly tolerable. The plot, however, is not one of those things. In fact, it's rather shallow. It's basically Jack Black and Michael Cera being banished and taking part in an *ahem* "epic" adventure, that their crushes just happen to be a part of. Unlike most people (everyone I work with), I like Jack Black when he acts like Jack Black. But in Year One, he's SO crazy, that he eventually stops making sense. I don't know how Michael Cera ever got famous. He is one of the more overrated actors working today. Some of his jokes in the movie would have had potential if they had been delivered correctly, but he doesn't act any differently than he does in anything else. Nothing he said made me even giggle.
Now, the side characters DID give me a few chuckles. For the most part, the references to the Bible didn't bother me that much. Hank Azaria and *drumroll* McLOVIN did provide some decent jokes as Abraham and... whoever McLovin played. David Cross wasn't that funny, but he was still somewhat entertaining. Oliver Platt got the most laughs in the theater, but none of them were from me.
Some of the jokes weren't even finished, like the snake around Michael Cera, or when Michael Cera is spooning with another guy. Judging from the quality of the other jokes in the movie, I don't think they would even be that funny anyway. Year One's supporting characters may be the only reason to see this movie. I DO NOT reccommend this to anyone with a good sense of humor. I give it a very VERY low...
